Burro Schmidt Tunnel, Jawbone Canyon, CA

Red Rock Canyon, CA

Burro Schmidt's lodgings are now the museum.

Darkness begins here.

Just outside the end of the tunnel, the southerly view over Koehn Dry Lake hasn't changed appreciably since Burro's day.

Slice of modern desert life as seen from the parking area. Please don't take the fork in the path.

Looking out from an unknown distance.

You've just walked half a mile in a mountain.

You turned east off Hwy 14 and have been heading along Randsburg-Redrock Road. Here's where you turn left onto EP100. The white speck by the telephone pole is a 55 gallon drum. If you get to the intersection with Garlock Road, you overshot this by about a mile.

The open air convenience (a 2-holer, even) at the edge of the tailings pile by the tunnel entrance.

Anybody over 5'-6" should heed this sign, the only reading matter in the tunnel.

If you get lucky, you may spot one of these, too.

let's say you're heading north along hwy 14 past mojave, CA and want a little side trip. let's say you're also driving a vehicle with enough ground clearance and don't mind getting it a little dusty. here's a candidate that will take you in and out of copper mountain. there's a map and more in Recipe Rangers in the West. there's also a great marinara sauce recipe. if you want more info, stop at the jawbone canyon ranger station. they'll give you a map, too.
